It comes complete with his 'bikeography' - a fully illustrated listing of the many and various cycles he's created, complete with his own recollections on each of the 74 machines. Born in St Albans during WW2, Mike Burrows left school without qualifications. Model aircraft captured his imagination and he qualified for the world championships. The lessons he learned about aerodynamics later proved crucial to his cycle designs. Mike's day jobs revolved around engineering. Meanwhile, he developed a deep interest in cycling and cycle design, starting modestly with local club cycling and building a conventional bike. In 1980, the world's first international Human Powered Vehicle event was held in Brighton; Mike became fascinated by possibilities for development that the world of recumbent and streamlined cycles offered. He developed the Speedy recumbent tricycle as a training aid and it became a classic design. Realising the importance of aerodynamics, Mike created a carbon-fibre monocoque design that evolved into the Lotus Sport bike. With this, Chris Boardman won Britain's first Olympic cycling gold medal in 72 years and Chris provides the book's foreword. Mike has now designed 74 cycles, ranging from streamlined recumbents and record-breaking monocoques to cargo carriers and city bikes. This book includes his own descriptions and recollections of all his machines and features numerous illustrations, most in colour. The book also reveals the candid opinions of Mike's closest collaborators and has a foreword by Chris Boardman. Mike's biographer, Tony Hadland, is co-author of MIT Press's highly acclaimed Bicycle Design: an illustrated history (2014), was a consultant on Dorling Kindersley's The Bicycle Book (2016) and is author of Cycle Publishing's Raleigh: past and presence of an iconic bicycle brand (2011). His first collaboration with Mike Burrows was Bicycle Design: towards the perfect machine, first published in 2000 and now in its fourth edition.
